I agree, Crispin. Although there is significant scientific study of addiction's pharmacological, physiological, and emotional effects there is no scientific evidence whatsoever of addiction as a disease (just try finding some). I see addiction more as a behavioral flight from God and personal responsibility. The reintroduction of meaningful ritual in our lives draws us closer to God and reinstitutes personal responsibility.

The scietific basis for addiction has not been fully established. But studies show that addiction has its roots in toilet training, and the rituals of the child imposed by the parents, with the mother making the most contribution. However, the important thing is to uncover the truth and meaning of addiction, in this case media addiction, because of the preponderance of media in our lives. What remain as meaningful spaces--the basis for meaningful rituals, like meditation and silence, communal gatherings that promote kinships and friendships, adhering to a regimen of prayer and caring visits to others, including special activities of the Church to where we belong, development of talents and appreciation of arts and works of arts, and indulging in crafts, etc., must be strengthened.

For young adults, their membership in Christian associations can be strengthened and their engagement in mission be allowed. Perhaps, the known rituals of the Catholic and Eastern Churches can be looked into and their efficacy as "mission-related rituals" acquired. If at all, young people can be "initiated" into the mystery of God's presence in our midst by the breaking of bread among faithful and the liturgical awakening by the Sunday Bible classes.

Many adult Christians, who have left the faith because of media addiction, can be part of a "renewa group" or a program much like AAA to impel a change in their life's daily patterns.
